Phil James

Described by clients as “being good at evaluating and solving difficult issues” and “very clear and open in his communications “Phil has been dealing with the full range of legal issues arising out of the interaction between ship, port and cargo interests for over 25 years.

Claims expertise focuses on the ports and terminals sector and includes unsafe ports, collisions, pollution and environmental incidents, storage and bailment and all aspects of the movement of goods from A to B. Recoveries expertise, especially in respect of damage to port infrastructure, adds real commercial value to his offering. Recoveries are pursued with a share in the success of the venture through no win / no fee and no win/ lower fee agreements.

Risk management and regulatory expertise includes emergency investigation and response to HSE and MAIB/ MCA intervention, including in respect of fatal and catastrophic injury claims.

Business protection expertise includes protection and collection of port revenues and marine recoveries generally.

Phil’s practice area is not just about disputes and claims. Non contentious experience includes drafting sale and purchase agreements and carriage conditions. Recent non contentious activity includes project management of all stages of a major port infrastructure project, from planning and environmental impact issues to procurement and contract management and ultimately delivery.

Phil is married with three children (and a cocker spaniel called Mable). He used to play cricket, but dodgy knees have required him to focus on more sensible activities such as beach walks with Mable and playing golf.
